LED FAQ

What is it?

An LED is a semi-conductor chip the size of a grain of sand - encapsulated in an epoxy resin - It emits light when electricity passes through it. Colour is determined by the crystal composition of the chip.

Where do I see LEDS?

Most commonly as the power light on your home stereo or VCR. Also in traffic signals, vehicle tail lights and Christmas tree lights.

How long do they last?

An LED's lifetime is about 100,000 hours or 27 years if used 10 hours a day, or about 20 times longer than the best incandescent bulb.

How efficient are they?

LEDs, which give off very little heat and don't need lenses or filters to produce colour, are about 100 times more efficient than an incandescent bulb. An LED uses 90 percent less electricity than an equally bright incandescent bulb.
